Long synopsis

The tanuki, high-spirited raccoon-like creatures that dwell in the Tama Hills on the outskirts of Tokyo, have always lived untroubled and in harmony with their surroundings. Now they face extinction: these peaceful animals are being forced from their forest homes by ruthless human development, as the woodlands are destroyed and the hills flattened to make room for housing projects.

The older, wiser tanuki propose a plan to fight back against the human menace, by employing the ancient magical art of metamorphosis. After much training, the tanuki learn to transform themselves into objects, ghosts, even humans.

Their fight begins well, as they trick and terrify their human enemies in a variety of ingenious ways, but eventually the humans get wise, and the confrontation turns tragic.

Finally, the tanuki are forced to seek the help of the foxes from a neighbouring forest who have already given up their fight and are living as humans in the city.
