Long synopsis : From its striking opening image of a man hurling himself to his death from a multi-storey building, Ho Wi Ding’s CITIES OF LAST THINGS reveals one man’s fraught inner world and the circumstances that led to a life-altering decision. Told in reverse chronological order, the story follows Zhang Dong Ling, a former police officer who spends his time wandering the lonely streets of Taipei at night, pining for a lost love and fighting with his unfaithful wife. But tonight Zhang Dong Ling intends to act - to kill the deep-seated pain that is tearing him apart. As we track backwards through time, we see the world open up around him, revealing his relationships with the women who were pivotal to the person he has become. Spanning generations, Cities of Last Things builds a searing portrait of societal and political change, through a seamless blend of genres, from sci-fi to noir to romance. Reminiscent of the early work of Wong Kar-wai, the film finds its heartbeat in the pulsing rhythm of the city as it explores the roots of what ultimately makes us human.
